Chris Pratt is Star-Lord in Marvel’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’

Deadline is reporting that Chris Pratt of Parks & Rec and Zero Dark Thirty (there’s a diverse profile) has landed the lead role of Peter “Star-Lord” Quill in James Gunn’s upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

I remember when he was the deceptively simple jock Bright Abbott on TV’s Everwood, opposite Emily VanCamp, a.k.a. Captain America: Winter Soldier‘s Sharon Carter. Treat Williams for Groot!

  1. “The deceptively simple jock on TV’s Everwood”

Thanks for reminding me, Paul! That was an bloody emotional show.

  2. Killer. Chris Pratt seems like such a good dude. I’m not familiar enough with Starlord to say if he’s a great fit or not, but I think Pratt’s hilarious on Parks and Rec, and also did a good job in a small, but more serious role in Zero Dark Thirty.

  3. Love Emily van champ but who is Scott Pratt? I just don’t have interest in guardian of The galaxy. But yea I love revenge so she great casting.

  4. He’s funny as shit on Parks and Rec, and I have no idea how Peter Quill should be – so I approve of this casting.

  5. Oh god, I don’t care about the source material anymore, please let this just become “Bert Macklin, NASA Agent.”

  6. I’m not really familiar with Starlord or Chris Pratt, so I’ll just leave it to you fine folks to inform my opinion, or just wait for the movie. It sounds like its shaping up to be Marvel’s most ambitious endeavor yet, so here’s hoping.

VanCamp seems like a decent fit for Carter. Looking forward to both of these.

  7. I think this is brilliant casting on both scores.

  8. Andy: The group has had a few different names over the years. When we started, we were Teddy Bear Suicide, but then we changed it to Mouse Rat. Then we were God Hates Figs, Department of Homeland Obscurity, Flames for Flames, Muscle Confusion, Nothing Rhymes With Orange, then Everything Rhymes With Orange, Punch Face Champions, Rad Wagon, Puppy Pendulum, Possum Pendulum, Penis Pendulum, Handrail Suicide, Angel Snack, Just the Tip, Threeskin… [long pause] Oh, Jet Black Pope. We went back to Mouse Rat, and now we are Scarecrow Boat. God, when I hear myself say Scarecrow Boat out loud I kinda hate it…

Mouse Rat is dead – Guardians of the Galaxy lives.

  9. I don’t know what I’d be more excited for…

Chris Pratt branching out into a Empire/Jedi style Han Solo role (that’s how I always read Star Lord myself at least),

    or…

Andy Dwyer interacting with a raccoon and tree that can talk.

I’m as excited as Ron Swanson going through a series of increasingly complex riddles and clues right now.

  10. Avatar photo webhead921 (@Grapes4Lunch) says:

Also, the soundtrack for Guardians of the Galaxy will be performed by Mouse Rat. Nick Offerman will be Drax the Destroyer. Aziz Ansari will be Rocket Racoon

  11. This sounds fishy to me, but then again so did Chris Evans as Captain America. I trust Marvel’s casting and will follow them down this rabbit hole.

Not to be offensive or anything, but is Pratt going to have to work to get into leading man shape?

  12. I have yet to see either Zero Dark Thirty or any of Parks & Recs, but if he’s as good in those as their reputations suggest, it sounds like a good casting call to me. For me, Starlord (like most of the Guardians) is a mix of whimsical and deadly serious. He has to be able to roll with the absurd, as well as take charge in matters of life and death. So, if Pratt can be equally good in a sitcom and an intense drama than I’m pretty reassured about him being Starlord. I hope that my faith is well placed here — I really want this Guardians film to amaze me . . .

    • I think that Marvel wants to turn Guardians of the Galaxy into the next sci-fi franchise like Star Wars and Star Trek. I think that Chris Pratt is an excellent choice. I’m still curious how they will do Rocket Raccoon and Groot, maybe CGI? Overall I’m excited about this movie.

  13. I’m not familiar with any of the Guardians of the Galaxy, But I’m glad to hear Chris Pratt is getting more work.

What’s discouraging is the amount of comments from people who haven’t experienced the comedic glory that is Parks and Recreation. Seriously go to Netflix, or Hulu, or whatever you have to and watch this show, it is hilarious.

    • It’s the Office in a different scenario and totally works, witty dry humor and awkward moments alike, I’ve only seen a handful of episodes but they made me wanna watch em all. Netflix or whatever is better to blast through a season and more enjoyable w no commercials.

  14. OK this is a good idea.

so lets speculate on the other castings:

Michael Rooker (he’s in every James Gunn movie) as Drax

David Tennant as Rocket Raccoon (mo-cap)

    Gina Carano as Gamora

  15. Holy Chris Pratt that is awesome!!

  16. The only thing I know about him is that he was in MOVIE 43 as a man who ate so much Mexican food, his ass literally exploded when he gets hit by a car.

….So you’ll excuse me if I’m not overly excited over this.

Come to think of it, James Gunn was also involved with MOVIE 43 and his segments were truly offensive. Really not sure if I’m up for this movie now.

    • Pffft, those are absurd reasons to not be up for a movie, every project is different and what’s wrong with offensive, that was part of the point with movie 43, and that nothing’s taboo. Also that movie had a huge ensemble of solid actors, so Pratt being in that says nothing but he’s willing to simply have fun with a joke role, when the rest of his résumé is half witty comedy and half serious drama.

  17. Can we have Nic Cage as Superman now 😉

  18. i always thought that StarLord, Peter Quill, need both humor and the ability to be a leader. From what i’ve seen of Chris, from Zero Dark Thirty to Parks and Rec to Everwood, i think he can do it. He will bulk up like before and be both funny and able to pull in action. My question is this: are they gonna introduce the Guardians of the Galaxy in Avengers 2???? Or introduce at least Chris as Starlord? Because most ppl if your not a comic reader will not understand the Guardians….

    • Guardians is coming out a few months before Avengers 2, so most people will be familiar with them by the time Avengers 2 rolls around.

  19. BERT MACKLIN ….SPACE COP

  20. I think it’s a great choice, Pratt’s shown great diversity from complete comedy, dry comedy to total drama. IMDB his name and look at his résumé. I thought he was perfect in Topher Graces Take Me Home Tonight, he was a benchwarmer given a shot in Moneyball w Brad Pitt, Parks N’ Rec is totally dry humor and he’s perfect in his role from what I’ve seen on Netflix…I just saw him last night in the 5 Year Engagement with Jason Segel & Emily Blunt which is hilarious at times, dry humor, heartfelt and I would say a romantic/comedy but Pratt’s moments were scene stealers from serious to witty banter and that last bit is exactly what Peter Quill/Star-Lord needs. Peter Quill to me is more like a Han Solo that leans towards Bill Pullmans Lonestar from Spaceballs but can turn up the heat and seriousness in an instant.

  21. How many Chrises is that now?

  22. Really happy to see Chris Pratt get this opportunity, I’ve loved most of the roles he’s had so far. He deserves this shot.

  23. I also enjoyed Pratt when he showed up on this Top Chef season with his wife Anna Faris. This pick makes me more excited for this film.

  24. This is great news, Pratt is a good actor and I think he could really bring Star-Lord to life.

  25. Nice! Now, Nick Offerman for Groot.
