iFlashback! December 10th, 2003

It’s time for an iFlashback! A weekly feature in which we take a look at some comics that were on sale nine years ago. Why nine years and not ten? Well because our Mondays in 2012 sync up with the Wednesdays of 2003.

So jog down memory lane with me. The date is December 10th, 2003. The number one film in the box office is The Last Samurai, and these are some of the comics at your local comic book shop.

That was the week that was in comics. We are getting to the end of the year which means holiday issues! So, did you read any of the comics that came out this week? If so let us know what you thought of them.

Comments

  1. All I read from this list was Iron Man and Spider-Man. Humberto Ramos seems to have been drawing Spidey forever.

  2. 100 BULLETS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a fucking awesome & very much on my behalf missed series. (I might re-read the lot now)

  3. Awww, that was the JSA issue where the Big Three (GL, FLash and Wildcat) invite Ma Hunkle to work at the JSA museum! I LOVED that issue. God, what a great book that was.

  4. I bought WANTED #1 and then, I didn’t get the rest…

  5. I finally got around to reading Wanted the other day. Hated it! There wasn’t a single likeable character in the story. I’m sure that was Millar’s intent but it made it very hard to enjoy.

    • JG jones’s art made it alittle easier for me. I liked some character design, the story was a something new but I found the ending lacking

    • My friend hated it for the same reason – everybody in it was a jerk.

But for some reason it didn’t bother me at all.

Millar’s Unfunnies book, however, went too far for me.

    • That was the intention – take the hero’s journey, but with a villain instead. But yeah, I only read it the one time.

  6. I have never heard of a writer named John Jackson Miller before. Weird.

  7. I like how Keith Giffen and Simon Bisley has had a big career doing Lobo comics. Not a fan of the character but always wanted to try one of their Lobo books out.

Here are some other big events to occur on December 10th:

1884: Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain is published.
1901: The first Nobel Prizes are awarded. The winners are:
-Physics: Wilhelm Rontgen (For discovering X-Rays)
-Chemistry: Jacobus Henricus van’t Hoff (For his work on solutions)
-Medicine: Emil Adolf von Behring (For finding a serum therapy for diphtheria and tetanus)
-Literature: Sully Prudhomme (For his poetry)
-Peace: Henry Dunant and Frederic Passy (Dunant for founding the International Red Cross and Geneva Convention; Passy for founding of the first French Peace Society).

    • I love your other interesting facts every iFlashback, it gives me further insight to look forward to the article, good idea, don’t stop. Also, if your looking for a cpl entertaining Lobo stories, while I never got into his solo ongoing but love his mini series, namely two off hand…Lobo:Unbound and Lobo’s Back. I liked his pivotal role in the course of events in 52 as well (the 52 week story), along side characters Adam Strange and Starfire, it was…different. A lot of people don’t care much for the character but I suppose it’s his intergalactic undead bounty hunter with mature content, bizarre and I don’t give a frag style that appealed to me when I discovered him at 12 and didn’t know there were characters like that in the DCU, so he stuck with me as a character who raised the bar on PG-13.

  8. That was X-23’s first appearance in NYX. I have that issue, but that book was just kind of a let down after all the hype.

I don’t remember Ultimate Six at all but I have all 7 (?) issues of it. I must have really loved it!

So 9 years ago Marvel’s Ultimate books were 1.74 cheaper? From 2.25 to 3.99, that is some major inflation.

  9. “Wow Catwoman needs a shave” Thats hilarious and love that cover. Still like to read Wanted as it looks more appealing than the movie, what with the bad ass black stealthy assassin outfit and have really enjoyed many Millar works and am a fan of J.G.Jones art. Love The Authority and Lobo (specific minis, not his ongoing and he has his place as a great cameo or supporting character in arcs) and the would check that out just for the bizarre pairing, art and ultra-violence.

  10. heh, I remember that JSA cover, great stuff. I noticed DC is reprinting Stars and STRIPE soon, if people are looking for fun JSA-style adventure from around that time.

  11. I got that NSX which I think use to be worth something, or at least wizard wanted me to think it was, the issue wasn’t that good though. I would love to see Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. reprinted it isn’t on comixology and I’ve been wanting to give it a shot.
