iFanboy Upstarts: Kris Anka

Some comic creators burst onto the scenes in full glory with a shiny new #1 on a Big Two series or something creator-owned, but others begin their climb up the ladder by being in the right place and the right time. Artist Kris Anka did just that as he took over Guarding the Globe last week for its finale, and from the wealth of work in that final issue and online people will be talking about Anka more as the year goes on.

Although he currently works as a concept artist for toy makers Sideshow Collectibles, Los Angeles-based artist Kris Anka might be going into a new line of work…if he wants it. Anka burst onto the comics scene last week taking over the interior art duties of Guarding The Globe from Ransom Getty for the series long-delayed final issue. Although Anka’s debut work was back in a short inside Popgun Vol. 1, this work inside the Kirkman team book will be the first time for many people to take notice. I first came across his work from his dramatic redesigns of super-heroes which I showcased on ProjectRooftop.com, and the recent CalArts grad has been turning out amazing work over on his blog. The artist is keeping his next project under wraps, so there’s no telling where he could end up next.

Below you’ll find some excerpts from Guarding The Globe #6 as well as some amazing pin-ups he’s done for Sideshow and on his own.

  1. Awesome!

  2. The man has mad skills.

  3. I feel cheated that Guarding the Globe #6 looked like it did when he was apparently capable of soooo much better.

    • I was thinking the same thing.

Some of this shit is great. For some reason I especially like the Bucky Cap in the last picture posted.

… But MAN did Guarding the Globe # 6 look god awful. Given some time it obviously could have looked so much better.

    • I could be wrong, but I’m assuming he was asked to conform to the sort of house style that Image has going on in the Invincible corner of their shared universe and he had trouble doing that. I really wouldn’t worry too much about it. The rest of his work is AAA stuff!

  4. Love the variety of stuff going on here :0. Definitely hoping to see some more stuff out by him.

  5. wow. just…..wow

  6. Been following Anka’s work online for a few months now and I’m consistently blown away by this guy. He’s really fantastic. Love the lighting he employs in a lot of his work. It’s really stunning.
