iFanboy Upstarts: Elena Casagrande

DC Comics are ramping up its titles this fall, and other publishers are doing the same. With this rapid growth in titles the need for creators to do those books increases, and that gives an opportunity for enterprising new artists and writers to get in on the ground floor and let their talent take them to the next level.

In this week’s iFanboy Upstarts, we turn our attention to Italian artist Elena Casagrande. Casagrande, who sometimes goes by the moniker “Lara West,” has worked diligently for the past five years at IDW on licensed series like Star Trek, Ghost Whisperer and many issues of various Angel titles. She’s shown an ability to nail actor’s likenesses when needed but also to show a more cartoonish dynamicism when the script calls for it. In 2010 Marvel began to take notice, putting her to work on standalone stories in Marvel Heartbreakers and Spitfire before recently giving her a multi-issue assignment starting in last month’s Hulk #37.

Here’s a sample of her work up until now so you can look for her in the months to come.

She definitely has a lot of talent and hopefully we see more of her later.

  3. @Chris: a request for a future “ifanboy upstarts”: Emanuela Lupacchino.  Another young Italian artist that is doing a great job on X-Factor.

  4. I really like the Black Canary sketch. Hoping to see some more of her work very soon.
