iFanboy Upstarts: Annie Wu

Comics readers are all about looking forward — after the final page of each of your comics you're always wondering what's coming next. Just as we're savoring the next snippet of story, we're also hungry to see what new talent will burst onto the comics scene next. Comics readers, I think I found your next talent.

Artist Annie Wu comes to comics by way of Baltimore's Maryland Institute College of Art, armed with a BFA in Illustration earned last year. Even before she graduated she had been making waves on the comics internet with some of her fanart ending up on Adult Swim, Project: Rooftop and other places. She's been featured in prestigious illustration magazines like Spectrum as well as by the Society of Illustrators, and it seems her next stop is the art world at large.

Wu has done little in the way of actual published comics, but not because she wasn't trying. Her first professional work designing characters for an animated webseries running on Elle Magazine's website. Information gleaned from her website & Twitter feed leads me to speculate she's working on a actual comic series from a major publisher, so now that you know about her you can join me in waiting as patiently as I can.

  1. That Poison in Her Well image is breathtaking. Love it.

  2. YES! Annie wu is a personal favorite. Follow her on twitter

  3. awesome work…hope she retains that style and edginess in her published comics work.

  4. Love her stuff.  Super kinetic and interesting.  Not something I’d want on every comic, but definitly something I’d like to see more of.

  5. Absolutely outstanding. She has a touch of Williams III about her.

  6. Really great stuff here.

Although why do I think of ‘Ron’ when I see these images?

  7. Sweet “Flight” piece.

  8. Damn great stuff. Yeah, @dgazzuolo, I think that Conchords piece is my favorite.

  9. Can we see her do a six month arc on JLA? Pretty please?

  10. That JLA peice is fantastic. Love it. All her stuff looks great though.

  11. I see a touch of James Jean, a little Paul Pope, and and even a bit of Kyle Baker, yet retains all the flair and impact of a very personal style.

I’m kinda loving this stuff.  Thanks for the heads up iFanboy!!

  12. Love that she did the Henchmen from the Guild of Calamitous Intent from The Venture Brothers. Great work!

  13. Gorgeous. Absolutley gorgeous.

  14. Jesus she’s good.

I love how that punk rock JLA contest Warren Ellis did was utter crap, till she posted her drawing, and blew everyone elses minds.

  15. Good lord, give this woman a Vertigo book IMMEDIATELY!

  16. been following her blog since i saw her on project:rooftop, and she is awesome. And i agree with Kennyg, i’d love to see her do a vertigo book, like maybe some guest issues on sweet tooth, or fables

  17. @kennyg :Vertigo is right! I love her punk JLA and Flight of The Conchords. Its all good stuff and definitely look forward to a book by her. I’m really digging Ben Templesmith’s Wormwood series right now and love abstract artists like these two and Ashley Wood. There are some great artists in the Kid Robot world who showcase their talent on the Dunnys and have great art collections outside of Kid Robot.Been mostly picking up trades that are a little older and just love a lot of the good stuff I didn’t get into in my off and on hiatus with comix in the last 10 years. Absolute Sandman is on my list for older stuff in the abstract. Love that stuff, anyone read Shadowplay? Written by Steve Niles and acts as two books/stories in one, Templesmith does the art for one and Ashley Wood the other.

  18. That Stripes sketch…whoa

  19. wow, i can’t wait to check more of her work out.

  20. Wow, MICA is just down the street from me.  Her site said that she will be doing a short story in an upcoming issue of House of Mystery.  Which is my opinion is one of the consistently best written and drawn book out there!  It’s not uncommon to see art  stories in that book by Darwin Cooke or Jeff Lemire in that book.  If you are a fan of the Sandman or stories in that vein, you should pick up that book.

  21. @JSAkid  Some of her stuff reminds me a bit of Ashley Wood, Fiona Staples, and Gabriel Ba, but not in a copycat way at all. I’ll have to look into Shadowplay, I like Niles.
