Heads Up: Image Comics Previews – March 2012

Being a comic fan can be tough. With so many publishers printing more and more books, canceling titles and starting new ones, it can be daunting when you head to the comic book shop on a Wednesday to know exactly what’s coming out.

The current system of presenting and ordering comics three months ahead of their release as set forth by the sole comics distributor, Diamond Comics, doesn’t make it any easier either. We’re not a fan of that system, we think it’s slowly strangling comics to death, but we realize it’s a harsh reality of how the industry works and we definitely don’t want you to miss out on any of the cool comics being published.

And so, as opposed to regurgitating the list of comics solicited in Previews each month, we present to you some of the highlights of things you probably won’t want to miss out on.

SPOILER WARNING in order to get people to order comics, the publishers have a funny habit of revealing what’s happening in the books. If you don’t want anything at all to be spoiled, then you’ll probably want to skip this post and take your chances with your pre-orders and/or your shopping.

He came back. For us.

Because you gotta dance with who brung ya, Brian K. Vaughan returns to comics. I predict this will sell more copies than anything else at Image that doesn’t feature zombies and a TV show. Great deal too.

A new Hickman monthly, you say?

When Jonathan Hickman wants to do a monthly comic, he chooses to go to Image. That says something. Teaming with his Red Wing partner, Nick Pitarra, you can expect the mindbending and imagination explosion we’re used to with Hickman’s creator owned work. With no end in sight. And circles. “INFINITE OPPENHEIMERS”
What if the research and development department created to produce the first atomic bomb was a front for a series of other, more unusual, programs? What if the union of a generation’s brightest minds was not a signal for optimism, but foreboding? What if everything… went wrong?

Welcome to THE MANHATTAN PROJECTS, a brand new, ongoing, monthly comic from the creators of THE RED WING.

Brought to you by award-winning writer JONATHAN HICKMAN and possibly the best new talent of the year, NICK PITARRA, THE MANHATTAN PROJECTS is a look at history through a darker, much stranger, lens.

Because he couldn’t call it F–k Yeah!

It’s an ongoing from a dude who has loved Image Comics as long as there has been Image Comics. They’re taking the long term view of superheroes, and what would happen with them down the road. It’s gonna be big, and it’s gonna be brash, and with that title, there’s a lot to live up to.

Comments

  1. Man. I can not wait for new BKV.

  2. wow 48pages $2.99 for saga im in

  3. Looking forward to Saga since it was announced, and that new Hickman series sound great!

  4. I am so excited for The Manhattan Projects right now.

  5. Gimme gimme gimme! Luther Strode and Reed Gunther are good I know, but I want most of the other stuff here too.

  6. So much good stuff!

  7. I know I am WWWAAAAYYYY alone in this, but I do not get BKV. I’ve read Runaways and Y and I just can’t get into his stories becaue of his dialogue. All of his characters (especially his women) speak in a way that is far too self-aware and witty; and I don’t mean in the good Joss Whedon way. It is af if they are commenting on what is going on instead of acting like real people and responding to it. I had hoped that SAGA would be different, but then I read the preview pages and it was more of the same. To be fair, I did enjoy PRIDE and I haven’t read EX MACHINA.

    • Heh. I like BKV, and I think Joss Whedon is a complete hack. Funny, that.

    • Interestingly enough the two are big fans of each other. BKV’s Runaways Omnibus even includes a fan letter from Whedon, who apparently lobbied hard to have Marvel bring the series back after the first volume was cancelled and in the forward BKV lists Whedon as one of his heroes. Funny that. Or at least I thought it was.

  8. Wasn’t Rossmo on Cowboy Ninja Viking as well?

  9. I’m getting more and more into Image comics. Luther Strode is one of my favorite monthly reads, every issue is just incredibly fun. I’m REALLY looking forward to Saga and The Manhattan Projects looks like it might be good.

    Did anyone read Red Wing?

I want more NonPlayer (sp) than anything. DO IT NOW!

  10. Course -I didn’t like seein’ Scalped go. But then, I happen to know that there’s a little BKV on the way. I guess that’s the way the whole durned comic book comedy keeps perpetuatin’ itself, down through the generations, westward the wagons, across the sands a time until – aw, look at me, I’m ramblin’ again.

  11. Can not wait for Saga! I might pick up that Hickman comic, too. Just read the Nightly news and loved it! Did Feel better Now ever come out? I was excited for that one, but never saw any mention of it after the solicit in previews…..

  12. “Sometime you eat the bear… and sometime the bear eat you”
