Heads Up: DC Comics Previews – December 2012

Being a comic fan can be tough. With so many publishers printing more and more books, canceling titles and starting new ones, it can be daunting when you head to the comic book shop on a Wednesday to know exactly what’s coming out.

The current system of presenting and ordering comics three months ahead of their release as set forth by the sole comics distributor, Diamond Comics, doesn’t make it any easier either. We’re not a fan of that system, we think it’s slowly strangling comics to death, but we realize it’s a harsh reality of how the industry works and we definitely don’t want you to miss out on any of the cool comics being published.

And so, as opposed to regurgitating the list of comics solicited in Previews each month, we present to you some of the highlights of things you probably won’t want to miss out on.

SPOILER WARNING! In order to get people to order comics, the publishers have a funny habit of revealing what’s happening in the books. If you don’t want anything at all to be spoiled, then you’ll probably want to skip this post and take your chances with your pre-orders and/or your shopping.

4th World Problems

It’s an encounter we never quite realized we’d wanted but now eagerly anticipate. Wonder Woman faces off with Orion, spreading the always welcome Kirby krackle through another section of the New 52. We’ve already seen some New Gods residue elsewhere over the past year, but it looks like Azzarello is taking point on the formal introduction. An appropriate and well-deserved distinction for one of DC’s strongest titles.

Newly Declassified Liberty Files!

The WWII focused JSA: Liberty Files remains one of my favorite Elseworld scenarios and a major contributing factor in the JSA’s revered place in my hierarchy of hero collectives. B. Clay Moore returns to that alternate history with an all new tale, one I’m grateful DC has sanctioned in the midst of New 52 revision. Moore and Harris both have a stellar track record with these characters and I’m anxious to join them in a return to this often overlooked status quo.

• From the world of the JSA: THE LIBERTY FILES, witness the birth of a new hero for the ages!

Legacy

We continue to celebrate Joe Kubert’s legacy in the months since his passing with this collaboration of like-minded friends and colleagues. We;d hoped this would be just the start of something deeply special. Instead, it represents some of the final expert brushstrokes from one of the industry and medium’s true stalwarts and luminaries.

JOE KUBERT PRESENTS #3

Vertigo Unchained

Tarantino’s screenplay for his upcoming post-Civil War revenge saga gets the Tale of Sand treatment with a comic adaptation by R.M. Guera. The filmmaker’s drafts are notoriously lengthy, meaning oodles of potential content is often excised in various stages of production, pre and post, before the final product hits the multiplex. We’ll get to see an example of those deleted scenes here, as the comic is based not on the final cut, but an earlier draft of the story.

DJANGO UNCHAINED #1-2

Movie key art cover
Issue #1: 1:25 Variant cover by JIM LEE

• Oscar-winning writer/director Quentin Tarantino’s latest epic film script is adapted for comics!
• The blood-soaked tale of a bounty-hunting dentist and his partner, a recently freed slave, in the post-Civil War South!
• This is an adaptation of the full screenplay, including scenes that may not make it into the final theatrical cut!

The end is just a little harder when brought about by a furious mob of zealots. One of the year’s most exciting creator-owned projects comes to a head. How cool would it be if a sequel started three days later?

PUNK ROCK JESUS #6
Written by SEAN MURPHY
Art and cover by SEAN MURPHY
On sale JANUARY 2 • 32 pg, B&W, 6 of 6, $2.99 US • No interior ads • MATURE READERS
In this thrilling conclusion to the acclaimed miniseries, Chris and the Flak Jackets head to Jerusalem, the last stop on their world tour. But in this final concert, will the punk messiah rise above the protests from the world’s three major religions, or will he take matters into his own hands?

Hold on to your antlers as Jeff Lemire’s dystopian confection reaches its conclusion. It’s not quite the brass ring of the coveted 60 issue run, but a highly respectable and bittersweet two-score aint bad at all. Heartening or disheartening to see Gus so long in the sweet tooth, here?

SWEET TOOTH #40

Comments

  1. Apart from Batman I can’t wait for JSA: Liberty Files- The Whistling Skull really excited for that & Punk Rock Jesus #6 concludes hopefully a great ending.

  2. I saw the “They’re O.R. scrubs” quote and I thought you were going the Max Fischer root with an, “Oh, are they?”

  3. wangman31888 wangman31888 says:

my god, that Wonder Woman cover, *DROOL*

  4. WheelHands WheelHands says:

Death of the Family looks really exciting. Some great covers happening there as well.

But the introduction of The New Gods/Fourth (maybe Fifth?) World stuff has me more excited than anything else. I can’t wait to see what they’re going to do with it, and I hope it lives up to my expectations. Tons of potential there.

“We’ve already seen some New Gods residue elsewhere over the past year” Can anyone clarify on this? I’m not reading everything and I’m just curious where else we’ve been getting clues or hints.

  5. ctrosejr ctrosejr says:

Question — what is this “DEATH OF FAMILY” event all about?

    • Paul Montgomery Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

It’s the Joker’s bid to take out the Bat family so he can have Batman all to himself. The name is a play on the iconic “Death in the Family.”

  6. Paul, I love you and ALL of your Jesus Christ Superstar quotes.

  7. RedBaron504 RedBaron504 says:

I’ve been selfish long enough. I must start reading Wonder Woman. Also. Rocafort knocks it out of the park again with that Red Hood cover.

  8. daningotham daningotham says:

Really excited for ‘Death of the Family’.

  9. sunhero sunhero says:

    can’t wait for wonder woman.
    best book going for me.

  10. Death of the Family sounds really cool, but I’m not going to pick up any books I don’t already get, soi will only get a portion of the story. And I will definitely get Punk Rock Jesus once the trade hits.

    • Well there’s good news to that. Scott Snyder said that you only have to read the Batman title to get the full story. It’s in the Scott Snyder interview iFanboy did for Comic-Con 2012.

  11. “…rising superstar Ivan Reis” umm, This guy IS a Superstar and has been on some of the most prolific books of the last decade.

  12. MarkCWarner MarkCWarner (@MarkCWarner) says:

Did I miss a memo or did all the DC books get kicked up to 32 pages?

  13. kennyg kennyg says:

    More Liberty Files! YESSSS!!

  14. Drumanespic Drumanespic says:

DC delivering a fresh chapter of JSA : Liberty Files is probably my highlight of the year!

Really, really looking forward to this.

  15. TheMightyMEB TheMightyMEB says:

Looking forward to Joker’s return, and I might start picking up Wonder Woman. But this Aquaman crossover with Justice League… ugh. I don’t want that.

  16. I can’t believe I’m the only one to comment on Sweet Tooth so far. That cover preview almost makes me cry. I remember that first issue and how excited I was to meet this new character. And now it’s come full circle. Same cover except with ole man Gus instead. I love this series and can’t wait to see what Lemire is up to next.

  17. JSAkid JSAkid says:

You know I’m loving the JSA Liberty Files, I love the original Liberty File and the sequel The Unholy Three combined in one tpb, like to find that on HC, even the soft isn’t that common….the new title The Whistling Skull sounds good and glad Tony Harris is doing it. JSA Elseworlds and New Gods are bringing back the DCU I love and also look forward to Death of the Family but am dropping all bat titles, save a few bucks and buy the HC that you know they’re gonna make shortly after. Also looking forward to Arrow, like the people involved and having just ordered Longbow Hunters, its pretty cool to read Mike Grell is involved…always wanted to read that one then I read this, that story had to be pivotal, substantial or influential of some sort to bring Grell on after all these years.
