Great Moments in Comics History: Superman #706

Oh. Oh, great. Superman is scared of the internet. Maybe he and Captain America can get together and talk about MySpace.

  1. gobo gobo says:

I wonder how much of that is G Willow Wilson and how much is JMS.

  2. Notahiro Notahiro says:

    Worst Superman line ever!

  3. This just makes me think that there should be a supervillain named “The Internet”.

  4. stuclach stuclach says:

Is Superman going for some sort of Captain Morgan pose in this image?

  5. JesTr JesTr says:

Superman’s true weakness is internet porn and even Superman can’t stop malware, spyware, and computer viruses

  6. Simmons Simmons says:

Why would anyone give a cat a cheeseburger?

  7. Barnabas Barnabas says:

This is no surprise after the recent Wikileak detailing his weakness to kryptonite, location of the fortress of solitude, and his secret identity!

  8. RoiVampire RoiVampire says:

This sounds like a line that would come at the end of an episode of Super Friends, right before everyone starts chuckling as a group.

  9. ctrosejr ctrosejr says:

I could understand if Clark said this, but Superman?!?!  FAIL!

  10. jmstump jmstump says:

Why wouldn’t he be scared of the internet? I mean you darn bloggers are taking their jobs away. :P

  11. Well, to be fair, Darkseid did use the Internet to brainwash the entire world that one time. So there’s that.

  12. muddi900 says:

    @jmstump:

These darn bloggers and their new fanagled interwebs! Back in mah day, we used to jerk-off when we were bored…

  13. JNewcomb JNewcomb says:

I’m curious. What is the context? Why were they discussing the internet and why did Superman say he was a fraid of it?

    I’m curious about the context.

  14. djd djd says:

@JNewcomb  : I haven’t read the issue, but here’s a review that makes it pretty clear:

    http://weeklycomicbookreview.com/2010/12/18/superman-706-review/

  15. Force25 Force25 says:

I haven’t read this issue, and the provided sequence and the review above hardly make me want to run out and buy it.

  16. misterckent misterckent says:

The art here is interesting.  Does anyone else notice where Perry’s eyes are looking?

  17. @misterckent: I noticed it right away. Shocked it took two hours for someone to comment on Perry clearly looking at Sups ass.

  18. JNewcomb JNewcomb says:

    @djd  Thanks I’ll read that!

  19. Conor Kilpatrick conor (@cskilpatrick) says:

@misterckent  They appear to be looking nowhere; he doesn’t have pupils.

  20. jabroniunc jabroniunc says:

This story is really cutting-edge. Wait, is it 1996?

  21. @conor: Who are ya foolin!? ;)

  22. bigben2012 says:

Wow, talk about a mess and quite possibly the worst line ever written for Superman

  23. John Siuntres wordballoon says:

actually this wasn’t a terrible story, but yes that panel was a bit trite.

I wasn’t crazy with how Perry was drawn but deep inside that story was a reasnobly consistent character portrait of PW.

But also I do see some merit in the idea that heroes would be affraid of the net when it comes to maintaining their secret identities.

How many google street cameras might catch a hero in mid costume change etc?

  24. GiantRaven GiantRaven says:

When Anonymous declares war on Superman is when I’ll start reading it!

  25. MikeFarley says:

In this case Superman’strue weakness is really bad art.

  26. pppiquer pppiquer says:

wow, I’m disliking the art AND the lines, good thing I dropped this back in 700

  27. Jack239 Jack239 says:

it all wilson on this average issues.

to me it really seems like a filler book that they gave the writer and artist a week to do.

    and AGAIN this is filler.

  28. Neb Neb says:

Maybe its to shore up his secret identity when he returns to Metropolis.  Clark Kent will return with a T-Shirt that says, “The Internet is my Bitch!”

  29. pyynk pyynk says:

And by Internet, he means 4Chan.

  30. Coming soon… Superman vs. Julian Assange!

  31. chelsea chelsea says:

Not only does it look like he’s staring at Superman’s ass but he appears to be terrified of it.

  32. Jesse1125 Jesse1125 says:

    @kingdomofevan  you WIN!
    Knowledge is POWER!

  33. this is why Ron hates Superman

  34. i really hate to be negative, but man that is baaaad! that art is absurd, and the dialogue!? ouch

  35. rafterman rafterman says:

    Superman hates Wiki Leaks?

  36. Crippler Crippler says:

If you love the internet, you hate America.

  37. RaceMcCloud RaceMcCloud says:

In his defense, the internet is what has allowed legions of fans free reign to rail against everything they hate about comics.  So Superman might be on to something and remarkably clairvoyant.

  38. Skyfire124 Skyfire124 says:

Im going to have to re-read that issue, I dont remember the art being THAT bad…I really want to say that panel is just a one-off.

  39. lmiller31 lmiller31 says:

Come on guys, Supes is clearly sarcastically mocking Perry’s livelihood since The Internet destroyed the newspaper business (which Superman failed to prevent, by the way.) And Perry looks shocked and appalled that Superman would so brazenly and callously hurt him so. It also serves to throw him way off the scent of thinking Clark Kent is Superman

  40. SuperMoore SuperMoore says:

Whats worse the line or the pencils? Geoff Johns, please save this title!!!!

  41. Superyan Superyan says:

WOW! I’m glad I stopped buying comics!

  42. NawidA NawidA says:

That panel was done in 20 minutes tops.

  43. Diabhol Diabhol says:

I expect the internet could turn Superman into The Plutonian pretty quick.

  44. LEXPRIME LEXPRIME says:

i cant believe this is from a relativly recent comic. wow, i love superman but that line is hard to swallow….ouch. lol
