Great Moments in Comics History: Justice League America #35

Foreshadowing! Tragic and inadvertent foreshadowing!

Comments

  1. For once during that era Booster Gold was 100% correct in his statement.

  2. *Charles Nelson Reilly tug collar*

  3. I got a shiver down my spine. I love foreshadowing!

  4. i think i can see blue beetle’s girdle under that costume…

  5. Truly amazing. Somehow, J. M. DeMatteis was able to predict the inexplicable and arbitrary perversion of Maxwell Lord’s character 15 years before it happened!

    • It wasnt an inexplicable and arbitrary perversion. If you read JLI max lord was completely set up as the shady liaison to the justice league who had his own shadowy motivations, the twist in countdown to infinite crisis totally made sense from a character perspective. Not to mention max lord had barely been seen in comics for years before that event.

  6. This was February 1990, wow I guess Booster really was time traveling.

  7. i miss the booster/beetle dynamic. i miss ted. i miss a good and humorous JLI book.
this panel was a great find.

    • sitara119 – I am with you 100%!! Bring back Ted now, please. The new Blue Beetle does nothing for me and it is almost insulting to have him any where near Booster.
      Blue and Gold forever!!

    • Try out Red Hood and the Outlaws. It was an early JLI feel to it. Its all fun, action, and comedy.

    • @RedBaron504 – I am already reading RHO and it is one of my favorite reads every month. I am not sure if there is that much comedy in it however; the action and suspense are heavily present. JLA, JLI, and JLE are now classics, no one was writing anything like this and the humor was fresh and the interactions between the characters was more the fore front. They were like soap operas it seemed.

  8. It’s even more eerie with the sitcom laugh track I always hear in my head when I read the JLI era.

  9. This makes me sad.

  10. Avatar photo MarkCWarner (@MarkCWarner) says:

Repost? Even if it wasn’t, this series was amazing for so long. This art defined me post Crisis and was the personification of suffering. From humourous (Manhunter lamenting of baby sitting Booster and Beetle, Oberon mumbling) – To sorrowful death of characters (Self sacrifice in the Nuclear Reaction Chamber; The Gray Man, The 1st Annual)

Great stuff all round. If you want to see a reboot done right. Check out the 1984 Justice League; Superman, and Flash. Though DC52’s Flash is pretty Outstanding

  11. At first I laughed. Then I remembered what happened during Infinite Crisis and I made myself sad.

  12. BRING BACK TED!

  13. I love the Ted Kord Blue Beetle and the foreshadowing if this panel, dug the JLI Giffen/Dematteis/Maguire/Gordon run with an oddball cast of colorful characters led by the most serious personality in the DCU, Batman…while two of the big three(Wonder Woman,Superman) and The Flash were being kinda rebooted or reconfigured so to speak, this underdog team (characters and creators in the big picture) were making a splash with a fun book that managed to still be serious and tell a good story, its often disregarded as a joke by hardcore JLA fans cause of the humor but I for one love this run and remember it for Maguire’s art of excellent facial expressions. Not only is this where he really cut his teeth but where the Blue and Gold really got put together and boosted Booster Gold into a bit more of a known character and it all led up to a tragic event in the DCU mythos that was revisited and like detectives,Power Girl and Batman(1st Dick Grayson then Bruce Wayne) all in a few issues of Power Girl at the end of her tried to solve the mystery of said tragic event. I bounce around with arcs in the big two and this was one I only read cause of the case they were trying to uncover, then the New52 and this was left a cliffhanger amongst others, anyway I’ll leave a long winded post with this: DC, tie some memories of characters during Flashpoint into the new 52 and connect history and the future.

  14. This panel made me feel that “Max Lord blasting Blue Beetle? Fuck that!” feeling in my gut again.

  15. Makes me wish the Booster Gold comic was still around so he could time travel to this moment and have that be the explanation for why he said this, trying to plant it in Ted’s head so that he could avoid it.

  16. Loved justice league international, such a fun series, I remember re-reading this last year and getting chills.

  17. BRING BACK TED!
DC needs to hear the cries of the public and give us back our one true Blue Beetle and reunite the great Blue and Gold. If Max is back I cry foul and think Ted should be back as well. This New BB is just not cutting and it seems like no one can see this. Hey they can move the New BB to Earth 2 and have all the fun they want with him. Just give us back our Ted Kord BB on Earth ONE!!!!!!!

  18. GAWD! can’t giffen, demattries and maguire just take over JLI, ALREADY!
IT WOULD SELL LIKE FUCKING HOT CAKES!
MOST OF US CAN AGREE ON THAT, RIGHT?!
THEY ALL WOULD BE COMIC GODS AGAIN.
    RIGHT?!
BETWEEN THE PLOT, DIALOGUE AND FACIAL EXPRESSIONS THIS WOULD BE GOLD!
    right?
the JLA retro thing was awesome. why won’t they do that?

  19. I guess I should read this issue, just found it in my stash of old comics, never even knew I had this one.
