FIRST LOOK: Walt Simonson’s Cover for THE AVENGERS #26!

We are already excited that industry legend Walter Simonson will be drawing The Avengers #25-30–which is probably the end of writer Brian Michael Bendis’ epic run with the team, if not close to it–and now we’re doubly excited because we finally get to see some art! (I say “finally” because the initial announcement featured the cover to Simonson’s first issue, The Avengers #25, which is by Daniel Acuna, strangely.)

And of course the first cover we see from Simonson features Thor, as it should.

The Avengers #26 hits stores in May 2012.

  1. Although I am still lukewarm in my enthusiasm for Avengers Vs. X-Men, man, that is one nice cover. I love Simonson’s art and it is great seeing him drawing such a high profile book. Also, from listening to him on recent Word Balloons, he seems like the most genuinely friendly man ever, which makes me like him even more.

  2. I can only read 1 Avengers title. I just switched over to Secret Avengers, dropping The Avengers, and I’ll wait to hear about if The Avengers is good or not after a new writer comes on.

  3. Ok forgive my initial reaction but ummm art looks great but i’m pretty sure at first glance and even after closer inspection that looks like some space scissoring going on there……just my very gutter minded two cents.

    • The “space scissoring” makes a glorious cover even better! It’s a really good time again to be a fan of Simonson’s work. As a child I never really appreciated his unique style so thanks to the Thor Omnibus it’s like I am reading it for the first time and it is pretty mindblowing. I was a stupid kid…

  4. Damn between these and the weekly sketches we have seen some hot art today. Makes me semi forget about the Gary friedich situation and the kirkman lawsuit.

  5. Makes Protector look awsome…

  6. It looks nice but… what the foof is going on in this picture? Is the Avengers answer to the X-men’s “fastball special” the “scissoring special’? Have their crotches been fused?
