FIRST LOOK: Gaffers and Grips….ASSEMBLE! The First Chairtastic Image from Marvel’s THE AVENGERS, Now in Production

This morning in New Mexico, Avengering is going on. Production has begun on next year's major motion picture event, Marvel's The Avengers, directed by Joss Whedon. Here now from Marvel is the first production image, featuring some very exciting chairs.

I wonder if the packing materials for these chairs featured a note reading: "Some assembly required." I'm so bad.

Here's the final principal cast list from Marvel

"Robert Downey, Jr. (“Iron Man,” “Iron Man 2”) returns as the iconic Tony Stark/Iron Man along with Chris Hemsworth (“Thor”) as Thor, Chris Evans (“Captain America: The First Avenger”) as Captain America, Jeremy Renner (“Thor,” “The Hurt Locker”) as Hawkeye, Mark Ruffalo (“The Kids Are Alright”) as Hulk, Scarlett Johansson (“Iron Man 2”) as Black Widow, Clark Gregg (“Iron Man,” “Thor”) as Agent Phil Coulson, and Samuel L. Jackson (“Iron Man,” “Iron Man 2”) as Nick Fury.

"The star studded cast of super heroes will be joined by Cobie Smulders (“How I Met Your Mother) as Agent Maria Hill of S.H.I.E.L.D., as well as Tom Hiddleston (“Wallander”) and Stellan Skarsgård (“Angels & Demons,” “Mamma Mia!”) who will both reprise their respective roles as Loki and Professor Erik Selvig from the upcoming Marvel Studios’ feature “Thor.”"

Set for release in the US on May 4, 2012, “Marvel’s The Avengers” is the first feature to be fully owned, marketed and distributed by Disney, which acquired Marvel in 2009.

Production in Albuquerque, New Mexico begins today and will eventually shift to Cleveland and New York.

Is it next May yet? Is it this May yet?

    And here we go!

  3. WeaklyRoll WeaklyRoll says:

It’s very surreal that this is even happening. Will our minds be able to grasp this concept once the first trailer is shown, or will they all melt from nerd overloading?

  4. itsbecca itsbecca says:

This makes me feel tingly all over.

  5. If I could show even this simple image to my 7-year-old self, he would be bouncing off the walls.

Jeremy Renner (“Thor,” “The Hurt Locker”) as Hawkeye

I am so happy I could cry right now.

  8. Paul Montgomery PaulMontgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

@tschafer  Yes, he makes a brief cameo in Thor.

  9. edward edward says:

    yeah, great, chairs, fantastic

Wasn’t Shane Black brought in to fix up some of whedon’s script recently and it’s being made now?

  10. tschafer tschafer says:

@Paul – Right, i’m sure most of use have seen the “blacked-out” figure in the cherrypicker shooting/aiming at Thor.  But that could be have been any actor or stuntman.  But this announcement confires that he’ll HAVE to be in it.  Just exciting for me.  Loving this.

  11. Selfstyler Selfstyler says:

    Awesome!  Cannot wait for this.

Thanks to a fan mashup trailer on youtube it’s just come to my attention that in Spanish the movie will be known as ‘Los Vengadores’.  Which sounds infinitely better.

  12. Paul Montgomery PaulMontgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

@tschafer  Understood. It had been conformed though.

  13. Paul Montgomery PaulMontgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

    *confirmed

  14. flakbait flakbait says:

Joss posted a little post over at Whedonesque to celebrate the start of production.

This feels like it shouldn’t be happening. Like everything society stands for would never allow this much “Holy Shit!” into one movie. I mean, eye-candy special effects, sure. But to allow The Avengers, a team most of the general public I don’t think knows about, on the big screen is… Well, I just never thought we’d get there. Lukcy for us.

This will be a tough one to pull off, but possibly one of the most satifying summer flicks ever, right behind Raiders.

  16. Cormac Cormac says:

One day, I’ll be able to take my grandkids to AvengersWorld and it’ll be because of this movie.

  17. That seems to be new information: That Loki is going to appear in this. I guess they’re going to be a bit more authentic then I thought about how the team is forged.

(Unless this isn’t news already, cause I never heard of it till now)

  18. ccarney ccarney says:

    Going to be great

  19. Neb Neb says:

This is exciting.  I live in Cleveland, and the town is really pumped about having the movie film here for a couple months.

  20. boosebaster boosebaster says:
One of many reasons why ifanboy rocks: Go to AICN and check out the comments under the story they’ve run about Avengers beginning production. I’ve never seen anything so hate-filled and so utterly sad.

I’ve watched everything Whedon has ever made and I am willing to guarantee everyone that this is what that man was born for – this film will blow everybody’s tits off.

  21. @boosebaster — Those Chairs are the wrong color. This movie WILL SUCK !!!!!!! happy? HAHA

  22. flakbait flakbait says:

heh. “There’s no way those chairs will hold up to Iron Man’s weight in the armor! They’re not wide enough to fit the Hulk!”

  23. @flakbait  –that chair is not the strongest one their is….

  24. @boosebaster  I stopped going to other websites than iFanboy a LONG time ago for just that reason. So much negativity. IFanboy is the site about comics for people who love comics. The internet was starting to make me think I was the only person who could read a comic or watch a movie without pissing all over it. iFanboy made me realize there are a whole lot of people like me out there. Good times.

Yeah, this movie is going to be pretty exciting. Anytime I can see Iron man on the big screen, I’m heading towards dorkgasm territory.

  25. DuncanIdunno DuncanIdunno says:

Has anyone seen an ensemble Superhero movie they thought worked? I’m stoked about having them (Avengers, 1st Class), but I worry that if they don’t use the divide and conquer strategy (like X2, and Watchmen) you end up with too much Superheroing on screen at once (Xmen3). Silver Age JLA anyone? – where one hero fights the villian, while the others hang back with uninspired smiling visages.

  26. azrael1981 azrael1981 says:

thats really cool. imagine when we see a jla table and chairs(ooohhh).
