C2E2 2013: Aaron & Garney Pit THOR: GOD OF THUNDER Against Malekith the Accursed

Thor: God of Thunder #13

Thor: God of Thunder #13

This afternoon saw the reveal for the next major arc in Jason Aaron’s Thor: God of Thunder.

“The Accursed” sees the return of long-incarcerated Malekith, former lord of the Dark Elves. But Svartalfheim has changed since their wicked taskmaster disappeared, banished to an extra-dimensional prison. Are they so willing to accept Malekith and join him on a worlds-wide revenge spree? It’s a hunt that takes Thor, Sif, the Warriors Three and a host of new comrades through many of the Nine Realms. It also comes just in time for Thor: The Dark World‘s theatrical debut and its theatrical introduction to Malekith (Christopher Eccleston) and his loathsome armies.

Unfortunately, fan favorite Esad Ribic will be taking a breather for an unspecified time, sitting out this entire five issue arc. In his staid, the very capable Ron Garney, who previously collaborated with Aaron on Wolverine and Ultimate Comics Captain America.

It all starts in September with Thor: God of Thunder #13.

  1. Ron Garney on Thor = Awesome.

Then, my next logical question is who is going to draw Uncanny X-Force now?

  2. I’ll miss Ribic, but I’m a big fan of Garney so that’s fine by me.

I just hope this is a creative, exciting, and original story and not a half-hearted attempt to coincide with the film. Comics being tailored to the films are kind of par for the course nowadays, and that’s fine, but those stories are often forgettable and in my opinion do nothing to attract moviegoers to comics. They’re usually something we all just have to trudge through for a few months. But Aaron’s a master, so in him I trust.

  3. Marvel says that the movies do not drive what happens in the comics. This announcement shows that the movies DO influence the comics. I’m not against this if the storytelling remains strong, but why deny the obvious?

    • Wasn’t there a lizard arc in the amazing spider-man around the time the movie was released? I’m kind of hoping for a zod story in action comics to accompany man of steel (but please god not by Lobdell).

  4. This is the best series in comics. Aaron is rocking this.

  5. Ron Garney!

  6. I question if you’re actually even at these panels. The Thunderbolts/Soule announcement was officially made in the panel AFTER you guys posted that article (I was checking the site during the panel) and the time stamp for this one coincides with the START of the Next Big Thing panel, not to mention Aaron wasn’t even on the panel, as you make it sound.

    • Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

We’re not always at the panels, no. Though Jimski was on hand for many of them to provide commentary. This was embargoed news and we published it at the times specified by Marvel.

  7. i had much the same reaction, since i was at this panel and the “infinity” panel (which was so. intensely. dull). can’t say that i feel slighted by this realization, though. it’s the nature of the business and ya’ll cover it well. more power to you and all that.

  8. I’m not happy about this at all.
