‘Arrow’ – S01E17 – “The Huntress Returns”

The Huntress Returns

Something tells me that Ollie’s love life is never going to be easy.

Here is how “The Huntress Returns” is described:

With his nightclub set to open and a new romance brewing with McKenna (guest-star Janina Gavankar), Oliver (Stephen Amell) is as happy as he’s been since returning to Starling City. But when Oliver’s ex, The Huntress (guest-star Jessica De Gouw), suddenly returns to town, she threatens to destroy everything and everyone he cares about. Meanwhile, Laurel (Katie Cassidy) and her father (Paul Blackthorne) struggle with the return of Dinah Lance (guest-star Alex Kingston), who claims she has proof Sara is still alive. Thea (Willa Holland) gets Roy Harper (guest-star Colton Haynes) a job at Oliver’s club, but he’s not too inclined to stop his life of crime. Oliver and Tommy (Colin Donnell) are thrilled they were able to get Steve Aoki to play at the opening of their new nightclub, Verdant.

I look forward to your thoughts, opinions, gripes, live-blogging, etc.

-Plenty of action in this one! Plus some unexpected twists, like the van setup.
-Roy is something of a badass – he beat the crap out of those guys, despite getting injured.
-Some nice inside jokes: Helena’s “stripper” outfit resembling the Huntress comic costume; the Coast City reference; -Det. Lance saying “I guess I should make that huntress”; Roy being afraid of the needle – a nod to his drug past?
-I liked how the partnership and respect between Slade and Ollie is growing. It can’t always be Slade telling him he sucks LOL
-It was cool that the “hey I caught a prisoner” plan actually worked, given what a trope it is (they missed a great joke opportunity there). Slade took those guys out fast.

All that said, it wasn’t perfect. Ollie breaking Helena out of jail was silly. And it looked like Helena’s crossbow might have shot through some vests the cops were wearing, which I don’t think would work. But for a CW show, I thought it was well done.

I will miss Janina Gavankar as Detective McKenna Hall, since it looks like she’s leaving the show. Man is she beautiful, and I thought her acting upped the show’s quality.

    • I don’t know about it being three beet episode yet but I pretty much agree with everything you’ve mentioned. My favorite bits were Roy’s aversion to needles, the Coast City reference (oh, please have Hal show up!), and the Slade/Ollie scenes.

I too will miss McKenna. It sucks she’s leaving so soon as I really enjoyed her character and the actress who played her.

More ridiculous, to me, than Ollie breaking Huntress out was her tiny crossbow arrows ability to take an entire engine block! Really?

    • Huntress is a character I think I love to hate. I get where she’s coming from, but when she busted into that safe house and killed all those cops? Then shot Oliver’s girlfriend? I would have totally been fine if he got her with an arrow. Plus she used his friends as leverage and threatened all those people in that club, she was out of control! Was there some kind of easter egg calling Oliver’s club “Verdant’s”? Like is it “GREEN” in Italien, or its the last name of something who worked on “Green Arrow”? All in all, pretty decent episode. Looking forward to next week’s.

    • I assumed her crossbow shot a special bolt that had some kind of EMP or explosive device that could disable the van’s engine. Just as Ollie had something to blow the doors off the van he chased down.

At least Ollie did take the shot, even though she caught it. he shoulda nocked two on the bow, let’s see her catch both!

  3. Speedy and Speedy sittin’ in a tree…

  4. huntress catching arrows…. -____- really…

    • That’s actually a real thing, with enough training and speed anyone can do it. Last person I know of that did was Chris Angel. It took him a few tries but he got it.

  5. OH and slade wilson by far is the most compelling person in this whole show. I REALLY hope that we get to see slade in starling city in the future seasons as an arc battling ollie.

  6. One of the best episodes, no doubt. The Huntress is out of control by killing all those cops. That was unexpected, but I’m it works for her character. A funny moment was when Diggle describes her as the T-Mobile girl (he told the joke much better than me) which actually made me laugh. Some good stuff here.
