Afrodisiac Wins AIGA Design Award

There are only a few books that are universally loved by those of us helming this website, and Jim Rugg and Brian Maruca's Afrodisiac is one of them. It was our March Book of the Month, and it turns out we aren't the only ones to lavish praise upon it.  Afrodisiac, published by AdHouse Books, has won an AIGA Award for being one of the 50 best designed books in 2009.  AIGA is the "professional association for design", and this isn't just for comic book design, but all book design, and I'm telling you about it, because I still love the book, think it deserves even more awards, as well as even more of your attention. Seriously, go get it.

Plus, the design really is spectacular. Those design guys aren't wrong.

Comments

  1. Go Afrodisiac.  Easily the best OGN this year! If you like Afrodisiac, make sure to pick up Rugg’s minicomic Rambo 3.5.

  2. Asterios Polyp was on that list too, and let’s not ignore Chip Kidd either. He has contributed some of the greatest comic cover designs ever.

  3. Well deserved – that’s a most eye-catching design.

  4. Great book, very well designed. As Mart said: well deserved.

  5. Its a pretty big deal for the AIGA to acknowledge a comic as one of their top books of the year. Its a bit like the Academy giving best picture to a comedy.

  6. This was totally worth it

  7. I just finally read this last week and thoroughly enjoyed it. Loved the different comic designs they used. Hopefully, there will be a sequel.

  8. This was a very entertaining book with a lot of lol moments. I’m glad to see the "king of the Concrete Jungle" get some love.

  9. Yay for design! 🙂

  10. Any word on when they’re going to reprint this?  I missed the bus.

  11. Several of the affiliates on Amazon have new and used copies available.

  12. I just got my copy a few weeks ago, it’s a great book with a lot of detail

  13. Thanks for posting this Josh… and for all the AFRO love. I just registered so that I could answer one question on this thread.  The 2nd printing was just received last week. Diamond should have gotten their copies yesterday. So, your LCS should have them next week. DCBS just ordered a box, too.

  14. Win!!!

  15. Cool. I’m still trying to hunt down a copy though. It seems like it’s sold out.

  16. Well deserved. An amazing design style(s) from start to finish

  17. Well, we prefer you purchase from your LCS, when possible. But if that’s not an option, we also sell copies from our site.

  18. @ChrisPitzer: What’s your site? The problem is that I live in South Africa and not only have I not seen it at any of the comic book stores near me (there are actually more than you would think),  it looks like new editions are sold out at Amazon as well.

  19. @Ilash: Chris is the publisher of AdHouse Books.

  20. Thanks Conor. I almost put a link to the book in one of my replies, but didn’t want to come off as a "huxter." And yeah, we’ll ship international, if needed.

  21. Thanks guys. I’ll see what I can do. Afrodisiac does look cool.

  22. Oh and one other thing: will there be a softcover edition? If there is I might just wait for that.

  23. As far as I’m concerned, there won’t be a SC. Afro should NEVER be soft. 😉
